Which varieties to buy?

Garlic isn't just garlic. There are many different varieties of garlic which almost all differ in size, color, shape, taste, pungeancy, number of cloves per bulb, maturation date and storability. Most of us are not aware of these many kinds since they seldom see more than one kind in the local supermarket. Garlic is also rich in the essential mineral Selenium. It turns out that the type of Selenium most usable by the body is called Selenium Methyl selenocysteine. Garlic, selenium champion, is rich in this natural organic form of the essential element

Further down this page you will see links to the different forms of garlic that might interest you, mild, medium or HOT, but first a few important points. (On the other hand if you just want to know what Garlic Varieties are Available Now, just click on this link to jump to there.) . . .

Can I grow garlic? Garlic is well adapted for production in all parts of Australia. Yield and quality vary with climate, region, altitude, soil and pH, cultural practices, and variety of garlic. The term "biological elasticity" describes garlic's ability to acclimatise to these factors over time. No one practice is best suited for every situation. You will want to experiment with different cultural practices and the various garlic varieties to discover the best combination for your climate and your garden beds. Garlic, like a flower bulb, also grows quite well in pots! Each garlic bulb separates into many cloves, each of which will grow into a new garlic plant. We dispatch cultivation notes and a description of the variety you choose with each and every order.

What variety should I grow? To get the cultivar that bests suits you and your family's taste you should grow as many different varieties as you can obtain and try them all. Climate differences can make a difference to the heat of a garlic variety. Experment a little with what garlic varieties will grow the better in your particular climate. (Wouldn't a special variety also make a great gift when you make your visits to those special friends and relatives?)  Below are listed some of your choices. Because the stock of some varieties is often limited, orders are processed in the order at which they are received.

Choice of Garlic is a personal matter! Apart from the health benefits from eating garlic, many people chose their garlic also for their palate. They choose varieties of garlic according to its taste, heat or  bite and lingering savour. The taste of garlic can vary from variety to variety as so can the heat or hotness of the zest and the amount the flavour lingers on.

We recommend the daily intake of fresh garlic, grown in your own garden or pots, for your health's sake. Garlic is a food, but as eating garlic can favourably moderate cholesterol levels, blood pressure readings and thin the blood, we recommend you have regular medical check-ups to ascertain your readings. Garlic is also rich in the essential mineral Selenium. It turns out that the type of Selenium most usable by the body is called Selenium Methyl selenocysteine. Garlic is a  selenium champion and is rich in the natural organic form of this essential element. To read about these and the other health virtues of garlic consult Dr. Hullquist's authorative book all about garlic..

Mild tasting garlics from Garlic Farm Sales. You can enjoy the milder garlics for eating raw on salads or sandwiches or even chewing garlic cloves to gain the direct (uncooked) health benefits and antibiotic activity. They can have a very pleasant taste, with little heat but the agreeable flavour lingers on to be appreciated. Also they can be used for cooking, as with stronger garlics. Popular mild and pleasant garlic varieties include Chet's Italian Red, Simonetti and Giant Russian Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum, not sativum) which is exceptionally mild except in cold climates when it can develop a sharp taste. More details...

Medium tasting garlics from Garlic Farm Sales.Medium tasting garlics tend to be rather rich in flavor and not strong or pungent. They can also make sweet roasted garlic. :Popular varieties of medium-tasting garlic include Printanor, Kettle River Giant and Dario. More details...

Full flavoured garlic Full flavoured garlics from Garlic Farm Sales. Many popular varieties, such as Korean Red, Ail de Pays Gers and Californain Late have a spicy heat, but may be quick-fading, so the heat doesn't linger or overpower other ingredients. People who eat these varieties are usually looking for the enjoyment of strong garlic. More details...

National garlic varieties from Garlic Farm Sales. If you are interested in buying garlic according the nationality of its origin or area of the world then go to our national garlic varieties section. More details...

Other aspects you may wish to consider is whether the variety you choose matures early, mid-season or late and its keeping or storage life after harvest. These choices are showin on the detailed information of each variety which you can explore on our website. A selection of garlics (say three of each cultivar chosen) is a good answer.

Price depends on variety and size of the garlic bulb.
