These cloves are as good as the Elephant garlic bulbs and each five large cloves of Elephant Garlic (also called Giant Garlic) with good growth factors, can become five super-colossal grade giant creamy-white bulbs. These in turn hold equally huge cloves (around 4-8 per bulb) which can be sliced and diced for cooking. The easy-peeling cloves make perfect roasting garlic. This garlic goes fantastically in stews, roast vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes as well as soups and pies. Russian garlic is planted mid-March through until early June in the milder parts of Australia. It matures November or December and has a long shelf life. Elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum, not sativum) will grow well in most parts of Australia but can develop a bitter taste in a cold climate. It grows extra well if mulched with straw or grass clippings. Keep the soil relatively moist, even during the winter as this promotes larger bulbs. Large Elephant garlic bulbs under favourable growing conditions will produce even larger bulbs next season. They love water, but don't like being over-saturated.
